What is tap and hold?
If you've spent any time on X / Twitter recently, you've seen the posts: an image that looks almost empty in your timeline — until you tap and hold it, and a completely different, full-color picture appears out of nowhere. That trick is called tap and hold.
Tap and hold in one sentence
A tap and hold image is a single transparent PNG file that displays as one picture (or a faint ghost) on a white background and a different, fully revealed picture on a black background — which is exactly the difference between the X timeline thumbnail and the tap-and-hold image viewer.
Why the tap and hold trick works
When you upload an image, X generates a small timeline thumbnail by flattening transparent pixels onto white. But when a viewer taps and holds the image, X opens the original file in a full-screen viewer with a pure black background. Pixels that were invisible against white suddenly read as detail against black. By choosing exactly which pixels are transparent — and what color the solid pixels are — one file can hold two different pictures.
Two techniques dominate. The checkerboard method splits the hidden image into alternating transparent and solid pixels, so X's thumbnail downscaling averages it into a faint ghost. The A/B swap method solves the alpha channel of every pixel so the white background shows image A and the black background shows image B. Our maker supports both.
From kakushie to tap and hold: a short history
The trick is older than its current name. Japanese creators have made kakushie (カクシエ, 隠し絵 — "hidden pictures") with transparent PNGs since the early 2010s, and the same white-vs-black background hack went viral on Chinese platforms like QQ and Tieba years ago. In 2026 it exploded again on X under the name tap and hold — because on mobile, tapping and holding is the gesture that opens the black-background viewer.
